- Airport
Surat Airport has direct air connectivity with Delhi & Mumbai. Mostly the occupancy is above 70%. A new terminal building was inaugurated in February 2009. Planned improvements at the airport include a capacity to handle up to 7 jet aircraft at a time, runway extension to 2,500 meters.
- Traffic
Surat was one of the most traffic breaker cities in India as per survey by Aajtak in 2012. But to make the things right, traffic police has started issuing traffic tickets to the traffic rules offenders. The traffic police have started using the CCTV camera to monitor the traffic offenders and send them the ticket of penalty with their photograph showing the offense. No more mamus at signals, no more settlement possibilities, penalty ticket reaches your home within a week, even that can be paid online! Recently some policemen were giving roses to the two wheelers for not wearing helmet!
- Roads
Surat has excellent roads according to Business Today Magazine. Surat Municipal Corporation tries to improve road infrastructure of the city. Due to rapid urbanization and to get rid of fatal accidents Surat Municipal Corporation and Surat Urban Development Authority has planned to develop an Outer Ring Road and Middle Ring Road which are under construction to decongest the traffic from the major Highways passing through city
- Bus Service
In August 2008, the SMSS bus service was opened by the city Mayor. It is considered the best city bus services in India. Bus rapid transit system (BRTS) is planned for the city and the project is expected to be completed by end of 2014. It will connect main places to remote areas around the town.
- Metro Trains & Twin City Concepts
In August 2012, plans for an intracity metro train service were approved by Chief Minister Narendra Modi. This plan includes the construction of underground and overground metro trains and monorails. The twin cities of Surat and Navsari will also be connected by metro railway under this project. Construction is expected to commence soon. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is confident of making the metro rail project a reality in the city by 2017-18.
- Flyovers
Surat will have 94 flyovers till end of 2015, 63 of which are already constructed. These include some multilayer flyovers, bridges, cable stay bridge, X-longest flyover of india.

- Water Distribution System, Street Lights & Drainage systems
Surat has one of the best water treatment plants in India. It has a computerized water distribution system and a computerized drainage system with a sewage treatment plant to transform waste into energy. Every part of Surat has underground drainage and street lights.
- Pipelined Natural Gas (PNG) & CNG
It entered Surat in the early ’90s and most of the areas are covered under PNG. CNG also entered Surat in the early ’90s, and as of the end of 2005 more than 95% of auto rickshaws and public buses run on CNG as an efficient and less polluting fuel.

- Hospitals
There are several government and private-run hospitals in Surat to provide medical assistance to citizens and visitors. The authority has stressed e-Governance to bring speed to the overall administration efforts.
- Cleanliness
Surat was struck by an outbreak of a virulent disease somewhat like the plague, floods, etc. But what was most amazing was that within a span of 18 months the city made a complete reversal from a dirty, garbage-strewn city to become one of the cleanest cities in the country. This transformation was possible thanks largely to the Surat Municipal Corporation and the efforts of the community.
- Literacy rate
According to the 2013 India census, the population of Surat is 75.73 laces. Surat has an average literacy rate of 91%, higher than the national average of 79.5%: male literacy is 94%, and female literacy is 88%
- CC TVs & Surveillance System
The 280-square-foot video wall, claimed to be the largest surveillance screen in the country, is being installed at the control room of police commissioner Mr. Rakesh Asthana (IPS). It helps the police to view the entire city live through 100 CCTV cameras across the city. Surat police have decided to install 5,000 CCTV cameras at sensitive points across the city. While 1,000 cameras will be night vision cameras, 4,000 others will be simple CCTV cameras. This has been installed on PPP base with the help of city’s businessmen, city’s social persons, Surat Municipal Corporation & Surat City Police.
- Festivals & Security
Active participation of government is noted in every occasion, the festivals like Uttarayan, Diwali, Moharam, Holi, Navratri witnesses the government’s celebrations as well as tight security. Special task forces are appointed while Navratri for the security of girls in all the areas & the result is that no one fears even at 2:00 AM to travel alone in the city.

The city registered an annualized GDP growth rate of 11.5 per cent over the eleven fiscal years between 2001 and 2012. Surat ranked 8th in India with a GDP of $40 billion in fiscal year 2011-2012 ($14 billion in 2010), fastest growing GDP in India. The per capital GDP was $8,000 in 2010. Surat is also known as the diamond capital of the world and the textile capital/Manchester textile city of India. More recently it is for diamond-studded gold jewelry manufacturing. Surat is the largest manufacturer of clothes in India.
